Why I Joined OES...

Alice Wiggins, Former Grand Matron

When I moved to Lexington in 1981, I had never been away from home and sought out friends and resources within the Lexington area. I was going to college and working. One of my patients was very friendly and had a constant stream of friends that came to visit with her during a very lengthy and difficult hospital stay. I was in awe of her friends and the support they offered her. She finally mentioned to me that they were her Eastern Star friends and I then was enticed to ask more about the organization.  In April 1984 I became a member of Rising Star. Very quickly did I realize that I had an extended family that reached beyond the Lexington area or even the state of Kentucky, it was an international family. I have never regretted my interest in this organization and have a deep appreciation for the values it holds dear; Charily, Truth and Loving Kindness! The Order of the Eastern Star is so much more than Ritualistic meetings. It is a love and respect for what a fulfilled life is and can be. One that includes self satisfaction, challenges to improve personal image and leadership roles as well as all of the many opportunities to reach out to our communities and philanthropic opportunities.
